Using outdoor laser lights this Christmas? There's something the FAA wants you to know

If you hate hanging up those outdoor Christmas decorations, you were probably thrilled to discover something called "Star Shower" laser lights. The product - and those like it - allow you to plug in a box and have a laser show illuminate your home with thousands of flickering dots of light.

The displays can be beautiful but they can also be hazardous, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

"The Federal Aviation Administration's concerns about lasers - regardless of the source - is that they not be aimed at aircraft where the beams can threaten the safety of a flight by distracting or blinding pilots," the FAA said. "Consumers who buy these new light displays should take precautions to make sure that the lights are hitting their houses and not shining off into the sky."

The FAA said lasers could temporarily blind a pilot, as the small dot from the ground ends up as a large, windshield-filling blob of light in the air. Depending on the light's strength, the beams can also cause eye irritations, tears or headaches for pilots.

"It's equivalent to a flash of a camera if you were in a pitch black car at night. It's a temporary blinding to the pilot and also to the tactical flight officer, whoever we are with," St. Louis Metropolitan Police Officer Doug Reinholz said during an FBI news conference earlier this year.

There have already been two cases of laser Christmas light shows interfering with the operation of an airplane. FAA investigators say a Boeing 737 was struck last week by a laser while flying at 13,000 feet over north Texas. The source of the beam was traced to a home laser light show. In November, a Coat Guard C130 reported having a green laser light shined at it. Investigators later identified the source as a Star Shower Laser Light Display.

Star Shower 's red and green laser lights can project up to 100 yards. The manufacturer's website advises users to only point the lights at their home and not directly into the sky.

"Lasers should not be projected at or within the flight path of an aircraft within 10 nautical miles of an airport. If your intended surface is within 10 nautical miles of an airport, lower the angle of the Star Shower so that no lasers point into the sky," its website advises.

While concerns over Christmas light displays are recent, the FAA has long warned of the dangers of laser pointers. In 2014, the FAA said there were 3,894 reports of pilots seeing lasers pointed into the sky. This year's reports are on track to top that number, with 5,352 laser strikes through Oct. 16 of this year.

Pointing a laser and interfering with the operation of an aircraft is a felony. If convicted, offenders face up to 20 years in federal prison and fines of up to $250,000, according to the FBI. The FAA can also impose a civil penalty of up to $11,000 for each violation.
